Clint and I went down to Deck Seven together, but when we approached the door to stateroom 7031 and knocked, no one answered. We tried again. Still nothing. The Do Not Disturb sign swung from the doorknob.

“Miss Barrar?” I called through the door. “This is Detective Alex Ryder with the Tampa Bay Police Department. I’d like to talk to you about what you might have seen at the pool party on Deck Ten earlier?”

No answer.

“Do you have a universal key?” I asked Clint. “Or a battering ram?”

“Got a key.”

As he pulled it from his belt and reached forward to scan it against Daniella’s door pad, one of the security guards on the floor turned the corner and ran toward us.

“Boss, don’t!” he said, knocking the key from Clint’s hand. “You can’t do that.”

Clint glared at the young security guard. “You better have a damn good reason for laying hands on me, Tosh.”

Tosh, whose security uniform looked several sizes too big for him, blushed and ducked to retrieve Clint’s key card from the floor. “Sorry, sir, but you can’t go in there.”

“Why the hell not?” Clint bellowed.

“Because she’s sick,” Tosh whispered, as if to remind Clint that the guests behind the other cabin doors might be asleep. “She was exhibiting signs of the stomach flu. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea—”

“I know what the symptoms of a stomach flu are, Tosh. What’s your damn point?”

“Sir, protocol aboard the Emerald Adventure states that any guest exhibiting symptoms of a contagious issue like the stomach flu must be quarantined to their room until the symptoms have passed and a medical professional has cleared the guest to interact safely with others aboard the ship,” Tosh reported in a robotic voice like he had memorized the manual for health safety word for word. “If you go in there, you risk exposing yourself to whatever she has. Then you could spread it to the rest of the ship. With all due respect, sir, I can’t let you access that stateroom.”
